As you might expect, some books appeal to and are appropriate for younger readers (plot, characters, vocabulary, etc.) and others for older readers (adult language and themes; intense situations). A few exceptional books can be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
The books included in the Summit Mock Newbery Book Club have received good reviews, but they have not been screened. Readers should review jacket summaries and publication information summaries (usually found on the back of the title page) for help in determining whether a book suits them. A fourth grader might think twice about selecting a book with eighth grade characters.
As we read through our list of new books, we will use this page to suggest which books seem particularly appropriate for younger readers and which for older readers. Not all books will be included. Each reader must use his or her own good judgment when selecting books, and everyone should feel free to put down a book which makes him or her feel unhappy or uncomfortable.
If you don't feel comfortable selecting a book from the homepage list (under Blog Archive), talk with Mrs. Jester or Mrs. Pounds or wait until you see books listed below.
Look for Mock Newbery books on the book shelves in the fireplace room on the library's second floor. Each book will have a tag on it to indicate that it is a Mock Newbery selection. Please check out only one book at a time and keep it only 2-3 weeks so everyone may have a chance to read as many books as possible. The library is open on Tuesdays during the summer; please see Mrs. Jester if you have questions and want to check out/return books.
